This timber comes from Guiana and Trinidad.

Appearance

The wood is of a chestnut-brown colour, sometimes beautifully figured.

Characteristics

The timber is very tough, hard, and heavy; the grain is close, generally straight, but sometimes twisted so that the wood is difficult to split. An oil in the pores makes the wood very durable. It is free from dry rot, but subject to starshake.

Uses

It is admirably adapted for shipbuilding.

Market forms. - Logs 18 to 35 feet long, and 12 to 20 inches square.
