Spirit of wine, 3/4 pint; vinegar, 5 pints; gum Senegal in powder, 1/2 lb.; loaf sugar, 6 oz.; powdered galls, 2 oz.; green copperas, 4 oz. Dissolve the cum and sugar in the water; strain, and put on a slow fire, but don't boil; now put in the galls, copperas, and the alcohol; stir well for five minutes; set off; and when nearly cool strain through flannel, and bottle for use. It is applied with a pencil brush. Must superior.

Molasses, 8 lbs.; lamp-black, 1 lb.; sweet oil, 1 lb.; gum arabic, 1 lb.; isinglass, 1 lb. Mix well in 32 lbs. water; apply heat; when cool, add 1 quart alcohol; an ox's gall will improve it.
