The first operation about planing is to oil your planer and find out if the bed is smooth. If it is not file off the rough places: then change the dogs to see if they will work well, and find out the movements of the planer. After doing this, bolt your work on to the bed, and if it is a long, thin piece, plane off a chip, then turn it over and finish the other side, taking two chips, the host of which should be very light. Great care should be taken in bolting the bed not to spring it. After finishing this side turn it to the other side, and take off a light cut to finish it.
