Cana la balsam is a sticky, yellowish-white material, with an odour somewhat resembling turpentine. It is a crude turpentine, obtained by puncturing pine trees (Pinus canariensis), and is similar to the other forms of crude turpentine obtained from Pinus sylvestris and Pinus maritima. On heating it. the volatile portion passes off, leaving a hard resin which is used as a waterproof cement for glass, etc., and for mounting specimens for the micros-cope; for the latter purpose it is dissolved in chloroform.
