Cabinet-makers finish the end grain of wood ready for polishing with a finely set iron-faced plane, and where this does not leave the wood sufficiently smooth the steel scraper may be used. Some cabinet-makers use glass-paper held tightly over a pad of cork, wiping over with glue water or polish to raise or swell the grain during the operation. As this dries out it binds the fibres together, thus producing a hard, dry, smooth surface.
