To produce crystals upon wickerwork, such as baskets, boil about 21b. of alum in 1 gal. of water, and, while still hot, pour this into a jar large enough to hold the baskets. When cool, some of the alum will crystallise out, leaving a saturated solution. Hang the basket in this solution, tying a string to the bottom and attaching a weight, so that the basket is suspended in the centre of the liquid. If allowed to remain several days, the basket will become covered with crystals, which will continue to grow in size if the jar be freely exposed to air.
