In tempering springs for guns and revolvers, make the springs red hot (be careful not to overheat them), then plunge them into cold water. Take them out, warm them over the tire, rub with suet, blaze them over a clear forge fire, and let them cool. The foregoing operation requires considerable practice to produce a desirable temper.
