Required: A teaspoonful of ground ginger (more or less). About three lumps of sugar. A pint of ale. A good dust of nutmeg.
Put the ale into a saucepan with the ginger, sugar, and nutmeg. Let it come to the boil, then taste it, and add more ginger, sugar, or nutmeg to suit individual taste. Serve in a hot jug.
