Some writer made a sensation a few years ago by asserting as the result of his experience that any one would be crazy who should in the future attempt to grow pears on the prairies. Of course those who have observed, know that there are very old pear trees in some parts of the West; but still the remark was thought to have much weight. A recent "College Quarterly" edited by Professor Budd, a careful horticulturist, refers to fine trees existing in Iowa and Illinois. There is no reason why the pear should not do well on the prairies as any other tree.
