In some cases the mammae undergo a progressive enlargement from the new-formation of proper mammary tissue. In this way the gland may come to weigh as much as thirteen pounds. It is to be remembered that a simple enlargement of the fat around the mamma (lipoma capsulare) may imitate hypertrophy, which may also be simulated by diffuse tumours of the gland.
