B. P., not official. - The dried half-ripe fruit of AEgle marmelos (nat. ord. Rutaceae).
Malabar and Coromandel.
Roundish fruit the size of a large orange, usually imported in fragments of the hard, woody rind, with adherent dried pulp and seeds.
Tannic Acid in small quantity.
Preparation, not official.
Bael Fruit, 16; water, 17.
Dose, 1 to 2 fl. dr.; 4. to 8. c.c.
The imported bael fruit is probably useless. In India the extract of the fresh fruit is used for the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery. It contains but little tannic acid, and its mode of action is not known.
