To Apply Bandages after Massage of Fractures. — The bandages are not removed till the surgeon so orders, as there is difference of opinion as to when a fractured limb may be set free of the splints.

The most important point is to reapply the bandage exactly as it has been applied by the surgeon in the first place, and to be quite sure that the limb is in the exact position in which he placed it. Great care must also be taken in the readjustment of the splints. The massage of recent fractures should be undertaken only by experienced workers, for though the work is very simple, it needs expertness and judgment, which only experience can give.

In the case of a lower limb, supposing fracture of the tibia or fibula, or both, as a rule a back splint with foot-piece and two side splints are used. The foot is bandaged to the back splint by a figure of eight, going over the instep and round the foot-piece, and over the ankle and round the leg-piece. At the knee the leg is secured to the splint by a circular bandage. The two side splints are kept in place by two or more pieces of webbing fastened by buckles.
