Latin, Eucalyptus
Eng., Eucalyptus. Synonym, Blue Gum Leaves. The dried leaves of Eucalyptus Globulus, collected from the older parts of the tree.
30 grains (2 Gm.).
Official Preparation and Constituents.
Eng., Fluidextract of Eucalyptus. Average Dose.-30 minims (2 mils).
Eng., Oil of Eucalyptus. Average Dose.-8 minims (0.5 mil).
Eng., Eucalyptol. An organic compound obtained from the volatile oil of Eucalyptus and other sources. A colorless liquid, very slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol.
5 minims (0.3 mil).
Antiseptic, rubefacient, expectorant, antispasmodic.
Principally employed as Eucalyptol in sprays or inhalations for nasal catarrh, acute rhinitis, hay fever, asthma, bronchitis, etc. Sometimes used externally in the treatment of ulcers and various skin diseases.
Eucalyptol and the Oil of Eucalyptus are frequently employed in oily sprays. Liquid petrolatum is an excellent vehicle. If used in aqueous solutions the quantity must be comparatively small. For external use they may be prescribed in bland oils, or such ointment vehicles as Petrolatum.
