It is an original and complete machine comprising lathe, driving mechanism, 5in. four-jaw chuck with reversible jaws, handrest and 2 tees, tailstock with boring bar and tool, 2 centres and spanner. Net weight, 231bs. This tool swings 6in. diameter above the bed, 12in. above the table or ledge, and it takes 12in. between centres.
It can make all sorts of things- toys, furniture, domestic appliances, nick-nacks for sale, games and sports articles, wireless apparatus, beads, jewellery, repairs of all sorts. No machine or tool will do such a varietv of work.
The Verschoyle Mandrel is the most useful tool for umbrella makers, general repairs, polishing, wireless work, spring and coil winding, bobbins, pipe repairs, pattern making, tapping and threading screws, musical instruments, flutes, piccolos, etc., for golf caddy-master's repairs, etc.
Fig. 105 shows it mounted on a small bench with two little legs. Bench 24in. long. The mandrel is really intended to clamp to the edge of a bench or table, or to a rail, but it is sometimes inconvenient to fix it in this way, for tables or benches are often not at the right height at which one can work in comfort. So it is very handy to set it up as shown above, clamped to a piece of wood 3 or 21/2in. wide by just under 2in. deep. These legs may be screwed down where required, or the lot may be fixed to a handy piece of plank which can be clamped anywhere by one or two joiner's G clamps. The little legs should be fixed at the extreme ends of the bench, and not as shown in the illustration. Even the mandrel with lengthening beds can be carried in the same way with perhaps a third leg in the middle if required.

The Verschoyle Mandrel, as may be seen, is made to clamp on to the edge of a bench or to a strip of wood up to 2in. thick. It is not permanently set up, but can be set up and dismantled in a minute, and then be stowed away in any corner or cupboard when not required.
The screws which clamp the under sides of the brackets should have a little piece of metal, the size and thickness of a halfpenny, inserted between the screw end and the table or ledge under side. This to prevent the screw from boring into the wood.
The tool is complete in itself. It requires no motive power nor treadle. It only weighs 231b. and it can be carried about and be set up anywhere wherever there is a ledge or a strip up to 2in. thick to clamp it to. Unless raised up on small feet, it has to be so clamped that the handle projects clear of the table or strip on the left-hand side.
The spindle carrying the material to be fashioned into shape is turned by the left hand in the direction toward the user. The cutting tool rests on the handrest and is held in the right hand (see Fig. 106). Possibly just at first the left-hand movement will be found strange and awkward, even a little tiring, being so unusual, but one soon gets used to it, and after a little while it becomes quite automatic. There is a constant power against the tool held in the other hand, whether at slow or at high speeds. One automatically turns the work round with just as much power and just as fast as required to bring it rapidly down to the shape required. How little effort this takes is reallv surprising. The article seems to shape up as if it were made of some plastic material.
The handle operating the drive is adjustable as to length and can be shortened for quick turning or lengthened where more power is required.

In order to give enough momentum to the spindle it carries a heavy 5in. face-plate, to which work can be attached. This face-plate carries 4 sliding jaws which convert it into a four-jaw independent chuck.
The centres unscrew and may be replaced by a variety of other chucks.
The centre of the headstock is 6in. above the top of the table or strip to which it is clamped. The headstock carries a round bar 20 in. long forming the bed of the tool, of which the right-hand end fits into an end bracket also clamped to the strip or table edge. This bed carries the handrest and tailstock. The top of this round bed is 3in. above the table. The under side of the bed has a keyway. A key in the bore of the tailstock fits in this keyway. The bed is locked in the headstock and end bracket by set-screws.
Loosening these set-screws allows one to swing the tailstock either side of the rotating centre. The tailstock slides along the bed, is locked where wanted, and it carries a long stout rod called the tailstock spindle. One end of this is screwed to match the headstock for centres and chucks. The other end carries a boring bit. There is also a loose handle which slides along the tail-stock spindle. The object of this handle is to form a depth stop for the drill or boring bit. The point of the drill or bit is brought up against the end of the piece of work to be drilled or bored out, when the depth of the hole wanted may be measured along the tail-stock spindle behind the tailstock. The handle is locked there by the set-screw, which should screw into the bottom of the keyway. When the handle butts against the tail-stock, just that depth of hole will have been bored. In soft materials holes up to Jin. can be drilled with a twist drill, and if required larger they can be bored out with the boring bit, the depth measured off as described and the tailstock inclined toward the operator for each run until the desired size is reached. The tailstock spindle is set back into line with the head stock by bringing the centres point to point, when the bed can be locked in place.
The handrest has two steel tees or tool rests, one short and one long. These can be tilted either way and adjusted in height to every conceivable position.
As described, the tool will swing 6in. in diameter over the bed, and 12 in. in length.
