Karl Immanuel Conrad

Karl Immanuel Conrad, a German architectural painter, born in Berlin, March 30, 1810. He studied in Berlin, and was a teacher of his art as early as 1830, soon producing many fine works. He subsequently applied himself, under the direction of Schadow at Dusseldorf, to the Romanesque and Gothic styles of art, and has executed many pictures of churches and other edifices. His masterpiece, representing the cathedral of Cologne, was painted in 1842 at the request of the king, and he made an enlarged copy of it, which was presented by the diocese of Cologne to Pius IX. on the 50th anniversary of his ordination as priest. He visited Belgium and France in 1845, England in 1851, and Italy in 1869. He has painted views of London, Windsor castle, Rome from the Pincio, and a picture of the pope's private apartments in the Vatican. In 1871 he was employed on a painting of the interior of the cathedral of Cologne. He excels in etching.

Karl Johan Dahlgren

Karl Johan Dahlgren, a Swedish poet, born at Quillinge in June, 1791, died May 2, 1844. He was educated at Upsal, and first published poetry in 1813, while studying theology. In 1824 he became minister of a church in Stockholm. He was elected in 1829 to the house of burghers, and was twice reelected. " The Tower of Babel" (2 vols., 1824-'5), "The Evening Star" (1832), and "A Lady in the Country " (1838), were some of his romances. His principal poems were collected under the titles Ungdomshrifter (2 vols., 1829) and Samlade Skrifter (1834). He also wrote several plays. A complete edition of his works was published in Stockholm in 6 vols., 1847-52.

Karl Johann Bern Hard Karsten

Karl Johann Bern Hard Karsten, a German mineralogist, born at Butzow, Nov. 26, 1782, died near Berlin, Aug. 22, 1853. Like many of his relatives, he acquired scientific prominence. He was for over 40 years chief of the mining department in the Prussian ministry of the interior, and published manuals and other works relating to mining, mineralogy, and chemistry. - His sons Hermann (born in 1809) and Gustav (born in 1820) attained high rank in astronomy and physics, and his nephew Hermann the younger (born in 1817) as a naturalist and traveller. The latter graduated at Berlin in 1843, explored South America during 13 years, and subsequently became professor of botany at the Berlin university. Among his works are: Flora Columbiae (2 vols., Berlin, 1857-'66); Die geognostischen Verhaltnisse Neu- Granadas (Vienna, 1856); Gesammelte Beitrage zur Anatomie und Physi-ologie der Pfianzen (Berlin, 1865); and Che-mismus der Pflanzenzelle (Vienna, 1869).

Karl Joseph Napoleon Balling

Karl Joseph Napoleon Balling, a Bohemian chemist, born April 21, 1805, died in Prague, March 17, 1868. He studied in Prague and became professor of chemistry in that city, He introduced the use of the saccharometer in breweries, distilleries, arid the manufacture of beet-root sugar. His principal work is Die Gahrungschemie wissenscliaftlich begrundet and in ihrer Anwendung anf Weinbereitung, Bier-Uvnurei, Branntweinbrennerei und Hefener-zeugung praktisch dargestellt (4 vols., Prague, 1845-7; 3d and enlarged ed., 1864).
