Rawlplugs are small, patent, tough fibre tubes, specially treated by a chemical process. They are made in all sizes for use with any size of screw or coach screw.

When you turn a screw into a Rawlplug, the principle of expansion comes into play. The Rawlplugs grip the wall, at the same time the screw is held firmly in position by a perfect thread being automatically formed in the fibre.

The old method of fixing by the use of a large, ugly wood plug and a cold chisel was a thoroughly unscientific and unsatisfactory method. No grip was obtained with the wood plug as it merely rested in the wall.

A wood plug needs a hole at least ten times as large as the hole required for a Rawlplug-it takes four to six times as long to fix.

The wood plug required a lot of hacking, plastering, and cementing to fix. It was thoroughly laborious and messy, and invariably caused damage to walls and decorations. In addition, there was the heavy cost of labour involved in plastering up and making good, which was always necessary.

The Rawlplug method of fixing is based on a scientific principle and gives a grip like a vice inside the wall which the heaviest weight cannot loosen. It has proved itself to be the only satisfactory solution to all fixing problems.

The Rawlplug method is clean and neat. When the job is done the Rawlplug is invisible, as the hole required is smaller than the head of the screw. With a Rawl-plub job, when you turn the screws home your work is finished. There is no damage to the walls and decorations, and no mess. This not only saves the time and labour of making good, but it creates goodwill for you when you work inside furnished houses.

The expansion of the Rawlplug inside the wall means that the fixture becomes part of the wall itself, and is permanent and secure. Rawlplugs are made to suit all sizes of screws and coach screws. The largest will withstand a strain up to four tons.

The invention of the Rawlplug is as revolutionary as the invention of the wood screw. Its inception and method of use are as simple.

To fix, you make a small neat hole (smaller than the head of the screw) in the material with the Rawlplug Too), or a drill, and insert the Rawlplug and turn home the screw.

From this illustration it will be seen that Rawlplugs do not merel rest in the wall ; they expand inside the material with a vice-like grip, and actually become an integral part of it. They cannot work loose, and will hold anything from light wiring to heavy machinery.

Rawlplugs have supplanted the old-fashioned wood plug, because they hold better, require less time to install, and cost less ; they do not damage the walls or existing decorations, and they save the time and cost of " making good."

Brick, Concrete, Cement Etc

Use the Rawlplug Jumping Bit (Percussion Drill) and Toolholder. Hold the tool lightly between the fingers and thumb of the left hand. Use a light hammer, give light, quick blows, turning the tool each time to prevent it jamming. Do not attempt to force the tool, simply tap and turn. If this is done the hole made will be perfectly round and the wall will not be damaged. The better the Rawlplug fits the hole, the more it will grip and the neater it will look.

Tiles And Glazed Bricks

Before proceeding to jump holes in tiles, glazed bricks, etc , it is necessary to remove the glazed surface over the area required for the Rawlplug ; this can be done by carefully chipping the surface with the point of a Rawlplug tool, using a light hammer for the work.

Should the tiles be badly bedded or hollow and not able to with stand hammering, the hole can be made by rotating the tool by hand or with the aid of a drill.

Marble, Slate, Stone, Etc

Use a Rawlplug Jumping Bit for making holes in the harder varieties of marble, slate, and stone, but for the softer kinds an ordinary twist drill can be used with advantage. When drilling, it is essential that a constant and steady pressure should be exerted and that the rotary movement should be very slow. Sizes of Drills should be as follows :-

Plaster Or Soft Materials

When fixing to soft plaster, use a Bullet Bit for making the hole and pierce by giving the Rawlplug tool holder firm blows with a hammer of medium weight-withdraw the tool by rotating it.

For hard plasters use a Jumping Bit and proceed as described under the heading of Brick. Should the articles to be fixed be at all weighty, it is advisable not to trust to soft plaster, but to jump the hole right through it into the brick beyond.

Lath And Plaster Walls

This is the most difficult of all materials to fix to, as usually the plaster is very soft and disintegrated, in fact, totally unsuitable to hold anything but the lightest of articles. The best possible fixing to be obtained can be made by a Rawlplug inserted to its full depth, and when the hole made in the plaster happens to come between the laths, the plug can be prevented from slipping through and being lost by opening out the ends. For fixing very thin articles to hard materials, such as marble, slate, concrete, tiles, etc., it is better to use a slightly shorter Rawlplug than screw and countersink the plug below the surface of the material so that the unthreaded part of the screw does not enter the plug, otherwise it is difficult to turn the screw home.
